Martha Jane Cannary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman. In addition to many exploits she was known for being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok.Late in her life, she appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. She is said to have exhibited compassion to others, especially to the sick and needy. The idea that Wild Bill Hickok was holding black aces and eights when he was killed comes to us from Frank J. Wilstach, whose biography Wild Bill Hickok: The Prince of Pistoleers was published in 1926. Wilstach’s was the most throughly researched and accurate account of Hickok’s life that had appeared up to.

Did Wild Bill Hickok really have the Dead Man’s Hand of aces and eights when he was killed?

Nobody knows what hand Wild Bill Hickok was holding. The late Joe Rosa, Hickok’s biographer, said, “The bottom line is nobody seems to know what particular poker game they were playing at the No. 10 Saloon in Deadwood [Dakota Territory] that day.”
I doubt if anyone thought the details were important at the time. During the chaos after the shooting, the cards were scattered. The aces and eights story did not surface until Frank J. Wilstach published it in his 1926 book, Wild Bill Hickok: The Prince of Pistoleers. I don’t think we will ever know what hand Hickok was holding.
